IN 1950 STARTED THE NEW ORLEANS JAZZ BAND WHERE ALEXIS KORNER PLAYED GUITAR AND BARBER PLAYED DOUBLE BASS. IN 1952 FORMED A BAND WITH CLARINETIST MONTY SUNSHINE AND LONNIE DONEGAN. WHEN CORNETIST KEN COLYER JOINED, THE BAND BECAME KEN COLYER'S JAZZMEN. RECORDED FOR THE DANISH STORYVILLE LABEL AS MONTY SUNSHINE TRIO. IN 1956 RECORDED SIDNEY BECHET'S "PETITE FLEUR" WHICH BECAME A BIG HIT IN 1959 SELLING OVER A MILLION COPIES, RECEIVED A GOLD DISC AND CHARTED AT #3 (IN THE US AT #5). AT THAT TIME CHRIS BARBER ORGANIZED THE FIRST UK TOURS OF BIG BILL BROONZY, MUDDY WATERS, SONNY TERRY AND BROWNIE McGHEE, STARTING THE BRITISH RHYTHM AND BLUES AND "BEAT BOOM". DEPPENSCHMIDT'S FIRST IMPORTANT JOB WAS WITH THE CHARLIE BYRD TRIO. THEY TOURED SOUTH AND NORTH AMERICA SENT BY THE US STATE DEPARTMENT. IN BRAZIL DEPPENSCHMIDT LEARNT BOSSA NOVA AND THEN CONVINCED STAN GETZ TO MAKE AN ALBUM COMBINING JAZZ AND BOSSA NOVA. THEY RECORDED IT IN 1962 IN LESS THAN THREE HOURS AND JAZZ SAMBA BECAME A BIG INTERNATIONAL HIT, THE ONLY JAZZ ALBUM CHARTING AT #1 ON BOTH THE JAZZ AND POP BILLBOARD CHARTS. IT INCLUDED TWO HIT SINGLES "DESAFINADO" AND "ONE NOTE SAMBA". BELONGED TO THE SO-CALLED NEW WAVE IN POLISH POETRY (SINCE 1974). 1980's SPENT MOSTLY IN PARIS. THEN, 1988-2006 TAUGHT CREATIVE WRITING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON. IN 2002 RETURNED TO KRAKÓW. THE DAY ADAM ZAGAJEWSKI DIED IS WORLD POETRY DAY.
