BORN IN SAINT KITTS IN JAMAICA, MOVED TO BIRMINGHAM IN THE MID-1960s. IN 1978 WAS A CO-FOUNDER OF THE TWO-TONE SKA BAND THE BEAT WITH DAVE WAKELING (VOCALS, GUITAR), RANKING ROGER (TOASTING, GUITAR), ANDY COX (GUITAR), DAVID STEELE (BASS) PLUS SAXA AKA LIONEL AUGUSTUS MARTIN (SAX). THEY MADE THREE ALBUMS I JUST CAN'T STOP IT (1980), WHA'PPEN ? (1981), BOTH WERE #3 ON THE UK ALBUM CHART, SPECIAL BEAT SERVICE (1982). ALL THREE WERE RELEASED ON THE BEAT'S OWN RECORD LABEL GO-FEET RECORDS. IN 1979 2-TONE RECORDS RELEASED THEIR DOUBLE-A SINGLE "TEARS OF A CLOWN / RANKING FULL STOP", EVERETT MORTON'S FIRST CHART SUCCESS AT #6. OTHER HIT SINGLES "MIRROR IN THE BATHROOM" AND "CAN'T GET USED TO LOSING YOU". STARTED SINGING IN THE EARLY 1960s IN THE DOO-WOP GROUP THE EMPIRES (ONE SINGLE IN 1962). THEN HE JOINED JAY AND THE AMERICANS AFTER THEIR ORIGINAL SINGER JOHN "JAY" TRAYNOR HAD LEFT. WITH JAY BLACK THEY HAD HITS LIKE "COME A LITTLE BIT CLOSER" (#3 IN 1964), "CARA MIA" (#4 IN 1965),"THIS MAGIC MOMENT" (THE DRIFTERS COVER, #6 IN 1969). IN THE EARLY 1970s JAY AND THE AMERICANS' TOURING BAND INCLUDED WALTER BECKER AND DONALD FAGEN (LATER KNOWN AS STEELY DAN). JAY BLACK WAS ADDICTED TO GAMBLING AND HAD A $500,000 DEBT, WENT BANKRUPT AND HAD TO SELL THE TRADEMARK TO JAY AND THE AMERICANS. JAY BLACK WAS PROFESSIONALLY ACTIVE 1960-2017.
