ROY HARGROVE  (49)  /  AMERICAN JAZZ TRUMPET PLAYER. DISCOVERED BY WYNTON MARSALIS. IN 1988 STARTED STUDYING AT BOSTON'S BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC, BUT VERY SOON RELOCATED TO NYC TO JAM AND RECORD WITH BOBBY WATSON (HORIZON AND SUPERBLUE). FIRST SOLO ALBUM DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH (1990). WROTE THE LOVE SUITE: IN MAHOGANY COMMISSIONED BY THE LINCOLN CENTER JAZZ ORCHESTRA (1993). IN 1994 RECORDED FOR VERVE WITH THE TENORS OF OUR TIME WITH JOHNNY GRIFFIN, JOE HENDERSON, STANLEY TURRENTINE, JOSHUA REDMAN AND BRANFORD MARSALIS. WON TWO GRAMMY AWARDS: 1998 FOR BEST LATIN JAZZ ALBUM AND 2003 FOR BEST JAZZ INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM WITH HERBIE HANCOCK AND MICHAEL BRECKER (DIRECTIONS IN MUSIC: LIVE AT MASSEY HALL). RECORDED 21 ALBUMS AS A LEADER. WORKED WITH SONNY ROLLINS, JIMMY SMITH, SHIRLEY HORN, OSCAR PETERSON, ROY HAYNES, RAY BROWN, JIMMY COBB, JACKIE McLEAN AND MANY OTHER JAZZ GREATS BUT ALSO WITH NATHALIE COLE, ERYKAH BADU, COMMON, ANGELIQUE KIDJO, JOHN MAYER ETC.

 

 

NOVEMBER  3 

JOSH FAUVER  (38)  /  AMERICAN ROCK BASS GUITAR PLAYER. 2004-2013 PLAYED WITH DEERHUNTER WHO DESCRIBED THEMSELVES AS AMBIENT PUNK (ALSO INDIE, GARAGE, PSYCHEDELIC, EXPERIMENTAL) AND RECORDED FOR 4AD, KRANKY AND STICKFIGURE RECORDS. FAUVER ALSO PLAYED WITH OTHER ATLANTA DIY BANDS: ELECTROSLEEP INTERNATIONAL AND S.I.D.S. AND LED HIS SOLO PROJECT DIET COLA. ALL OF THEM AND OTHERS (LIKE ALL-FEMALE FINALLY PUNK) WERE RELEASED ON HIS OWN INDEPENDENT RECORD LABEL ARMY OF BAD LUCK.

 

 

TOM DIAZ  (32)  /  AMERICAN INDIE ROCK MUSICIAN. PLAYED KEYBOARDS, GUITAR AND SANG. WAS A FOUNDING MEMBER (2009) OF THE BAND THE WORLD IS A BEUATIFUL PLACE & I AM NO LONGER AFRAID TO DIE WHO PLAYED EMO, INDIE ROCK, POST-ROCK AND POST-HARDCORE AND EXPERIMENTED WITH SPOKEN WORD. THE LAST TWO ALBUMS WERE ON EPITAPH RECORDS.

JAN PERSSON  (75)  /  DANISH FREELANCE PHOTGRAPHER SPECIALIZING IN MUSIC, ESPECIALLY JAZZ, LATER ALSO ROCK. HE MADE PORTRAITS OF THE MUSICIANS WHO VISITED COPENHAGEN LIKE LOUIS ARMSTRONG, MILES DAVIS, JIMI HENDRIX, CHARLIE MINGUS, CECIL TAYLOR, ORNETTE COLEMAN, BOB DYLAN AND THOSE EXPATS LIVING THERE LIKE BEN WEBSTER, DEXTER GORDON, STAN GETZ, OSCAR PETTIFORD, KENNY DREW, WILD BILL DAVISON, STUFF SMITH, ALBERT "TOOTIE" HEATH. JAN PERSSON'S PICTURES WERE USED ON OVER 1000 RECORD AND CD COVERS AND PUBLISHED IN DOWN BEAT, MUSICA JAZZ, JAZZ SPECIAL, MELODY MAKER AND DANISH NEWSPAPERS. IN 2004 PERSSON RECEIVED THE BEN WEBSTER PRIZE, WHICH IS AN ANNUAL AWARD GIVEN NOT ONLY TO MUSICIANS BUT ALL OTHERS WHO SUPPORT AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE JAZZ CULTURE. AMONG OTHER RECIPIENTS WERE HORACE PARLAN, DOUG RANEY, ERNIE WILKINS, NHØP, MARYLIN MAZUR, CÆCILIE NORBY, ALLAN BOTSCHINSKY, BO STIEF, ALEX RIEL OR NIELS LAN DOKY. 

 

 

NOVEMBER  19

WITOLD SOBOCIŃSKI  (89)  /  POLISH JAZZ DRUMMER, CINEMATOGRAPHER AND ACADEMIC TEACHER. STARTED PLAYING JAZZ IN 1947 IN THE JAZZ GROUP MELOMANI, WHICH WAS LATER TO BECOME ONE OF THE BIGGEST LEGENDS OF POLISH JAZZ. AT VARIOUS TIMES THE BAND INCLUDED OTHER JAZZ GREATS LIKE JERZY "DUDUŚ" MATUSZKIEWICZ, KRZYSZTOF KOMEDA, ANDRZEJ TRZASKOWSKI, WITOLD KUJAWSKI AND ALSO ROMAN "GUCIO" DYLAG AND ZBIGNIEW NAMYSŁOWSKI. AS A CINEMATOGRAPHER HE HAD THE PRIVILEGE TO WORK WITH WOJCIECH JERZY HAS, ANDRZEJ WAJDA, JERZY KAWALEROWICZ, ROMAN POLANSKI, JERZY SKOLIMOWSKI, KRZYSZTOF ZANUSSI AND EVEN SŁAWOMIR MROŻEK.

EDDIE C. CAMPBELL  (79)  /  AMERICAN ELECTRIC BLUES GUITARIST AND SINGER FROM CHICAGO. AT 12 WAS LEARNING THE BLUES FROM MUDDY WATERS, OTIS RUSH AND MAGIC SAM. THEN WORKED WITH HOWLIN' WOLF, LITTLE WALTER, JIMMY REED, LITTLE JOHNNY TAYLOR AND IN 1976 WITH WILLIE DIXON IN THE CHICAGO BLUES ALL-STARS. "KING OF THE JUNGLE" WAS CAMPBELL'S DEBUT ALBUM WHICH FEATURED CAREY BELL (HARMONICA) AND LAFAYETTE LEAKE (PIANO). RECORDED FOR DELMARK, BLIND PIG, ICEHOUSE RECORDS ETC.

 

TREVOR McNAUGHTON  (77)  /  JAMAICAN SKA, ROCKSTEADY, REGGAE SINGER. FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE MELODIANS, A ROCKSTEADY BAND FORMED IN 1963 IN THE GREENWICH TOWN AREA OF KINGSTON, JAMAICA

BERNARDO BERTOLUCCI  (77)  /  ITALIAN DIRECTOR AND SCREENWRITER. IN 1955 BERTOLUCCI'S FATHER HELPED ITALIAN FILMMAKER, POET, WRITER AND INTELLECTUAL PIER PAOLO PASOLINI PUBLISH HIS FIRST NOVEL RAGAZZI DI VITA. BERNARDO STARTED CAREER AS FIRST ASSISTANT TO PASOLINI, WORKING ON HIS DEBUT FILM ACCATTONE IN 1961.  BERTOLUCCI'S FILMS INCLUDE: THE CONFORMIST, LAST TANGO IN PARIS, 1900, THE LAST EMPEROR (OSCAR 1988), LITTLE BUDDHA. LAST TANGO IN PARIS WAS CENSORED IN MANY COUNTRIES BUT HAD GREAT SOUNDTRACK MUSIC COMPOSED BY GATO BARBIERI AND ARRANGED BY OLIVER NELSON.

ROBERT PLOTNIK  (75-76)  /  AMERICAN RECORD STORE OWNER. PLOTNIK aka BLEECKER BOB, EX-LAWYER OPENED VILLAGE OLDIES RECORDS IN NYC'c WEST VILLAGE IN 1968. REGULARS WERE SUCH VINYL HUNTERS AS BOB DYLAN AND SLOWCORE AND SHIMMY-DISC's KRAMER.  GUITARIST LENNY KAYE WORKED THERE 1970-1975 AND ONE DAY PATTI SMITH CAME IN AND OFFERED HIM A COLLABORATION. IN THE 70's, RENAMED AS BLEECKER BOB'S RECORDS IT BECAME A HOT SPOT FOR PUNKS TO LOOK FOR ALL THE LATEST VINYL, HANG OUT AND MEET MORE FREAKS. EASY, AS IT WAS OPEN UNTIL 1 A.M. AND AT WEEKENDS UNTIL 3 A.M. PLOTNIK'S LATER FRIENDS AND CUSTOMERS WERE DEBBIE HARRY, FRANK ZAPPA, DAVID BOWIE OR ROBERT PLANT AND JIMMY PAGE. LATER PRINCE, MADONNA, ANTHRAX, METALLICA, MEGADEATH. EVEN BEASTIE BOYS SANG IN "AN OPEN LETTER TO NYC": "STOPPED OFF AT BLEECKER BOB's, GOT THROWN OUT" BLEECKER BOB's WAS CLOSED IN 2013 AFTER NEARLY FIVE DECADES IN OPERATION, DUE TO BLOODY GENTRIFICATION IT DISAPPEARED (LIKE CBGB IN 2006) AND WAS CONVERTED INTO A FROZEN YOGURT STORE.
