ROLAND WHITE  (83)  /  AMERICAN BLUEGRASS MUSIC ARTIST, PLAYING MANDOLIN AND ALSO GUITAR. WHEN YOUNG, HAD A FAMILY BLUEGRASS BAND, LATER CALLED THE COUNTRY BOYS, THEN RENAMED THE KENTUCKY COLONELS. 1967-1969 ROLAND WHITE WORKED WITH BILL MONROE AND THE BLUE GRASS BOYS, 1969-1973 WITH LESTER FLATT AND THE NASHVILLE GRASS. THE KENTUCKY COLONELS BRIEFLY REUNITED IN 1966 AND 1973, BUT SPLIT WHEN ROLAND'S BROTHER, OUTSTANDING BLUEGRASS GUITARIST AND COUNTRY ROCK PIONEER, WHO PLAYED WITH THE BYRDS AND MANY OTHER LEGENDS, WAS KILLED BY A DRUNK DRIVER. ROLAND WHITE MADE FOUR SOLO ALBUMS AND SIXTY WITH OTHER PERFORMERS INCLUDING LESTER FLATT, RY COODER, RICKY SCAGGS, GENE WOOTEN, CLINT BLACK, MARTY STUART AND OTHERS.

 JOE MESSINA  (93)  /  AMERICAN GUITARIST, PLAYED SOUL MUSIC AND R&B, ESPECIALLY IN THE FUNK BROTHERS, THE MOTOWN RECORDS STUDIO BAND. IN HIS TWENTIES PLAYED IN THE ABC TELEVISION STUDIO BAND, WORKING WITH CHARLIE PARKER, DIZZY GILLESPIE, SONNY STITT, STAN GETZ, LEE KONITZ, JIMMY GIUFFRE, PEPPER ADAMS, DONALD BYRD, FRANK ROSOLINO. LED THE JOE MESSINA ORCHESTRA. SINCE 1958, INVITED BY BERRY GORDY, WITH THE FUNK BROTHERS AT THE MOTOWN RECORDS' HITSVILLE U.S.A. WORKED WITH DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES, STEVIE WONDER, MARVIN GAYE, THE TEMPTATIONS, THE FOUR TOPS, SMOKEY ROBINSON & THE MIRACLES, MARTHA & THE VANDELLAS ("DANCING IN THE STREET", 1964). IN 2003 WON TWO GRAMMYS FOR THE SOUNDTRACK TO THE DOCUMENTARY "STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN". IN 2004 A LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FROM THE RECORDING ACADEMY.

PAUL SIEBEL  (84)  /  AMERICAN SINGER-SONGWRITER AND GUITARIST. PLAYED FOLK ROCK AND COUNTRY ROCK. MADE THREE ALBUMS WOODSMOKE AND ORANGES (1970), JACK-KNIFE GYPSY (1971) AND A COMEBACK ALBUM LIVE AT McCABE'S (1978). HIS SONGS WERE COVERED BY A PUNK ROCK PIONEER WILLY DeVILLE, EMMYLOU HARRIS, BONNIE RAITT, JERRY JEFF WALKER, WAYLON JENNINGS, KATE WOLF, THE FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS, RICK ROBERTS, DAVID BROMBERG, MARY McCASLIN, LEO KOTTKE, LINDA RONSTADT. AFTER 1971 STOPPED WRITING, DEPRESSED AND ADDICTED. WORKED AS A BREAD BAKER.

KEN WEST  (64)  /  AUSTRALIAN MUSIC PROMOTER, CO-FOUNDER OF BIG DAY OUT (BDO) AN ANNUAL MUSIC FESTIVAL HELD IN 5 BIGGEST AUSTRALIAN CITIES AND IN NEW ZEALAND. (1992-1997, 1999-2014). SOME OF THE PERFORMERS WERE THE RAMONES, IGGY POP AND THE STOOGES, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, NEIL YOUNG, VIOLENT FEMMES, SOUNGARDEN, NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS, NIRVANA, NINE INCH NAILS, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, TOOL, THE OFFSPRING, THE PRODIGY, HOLE, FOO FIGHTERS, THE SMASHING PUMPKINS, THE WHITE STRIPES. MANY CONTROVERSIES WERE INVOLVED, INCLUDING PROBLEMS WITH SAFETY, DRUGS, ALCOHOL AND VIOLENCE AND DEATHS OF FANS CAUSED BY LACK OF SECURITY (DURING A LIMP BIZKIT SHOW) AND DRUG USE.

CHRIS BAILEY  (65)  /  AUSTRALIAN PUNK MUSICIAN, SINGER, SONGWRITER, GUITARIST, BASS GUITARIST, PRODUCER, CO-FOUNDER OF THE BAND THE SAINTS. BORN IN KENYA, GREW UP IN BELFAST, AT 7 MOVED WITH FAMILY TO AUSTRALIA. WITH HIGH SCHOOL FRIENDS ED KUEPPER AND IVOR HAY FORMED THE SAINTS IN 1973 (ORIGINALLY CALLED KID GALAHAD AND THE ETERNALS), THE FIRST PUNK BAND OUTSIDE THE US. THEIR DEBUT SINGLE, THE ICONIC "(I'M) STRANDED", RELEASED IN SEPTEMBER 1976 ON THEIR OWN FATAL RECORDS, WAS THE FIRST NON-AMERICAN PUNK ROCK SINGLE, BEFORE THE DAMNED, THE SEX PISTOLS, THE CLASH. ANOTHER CLASSIC SINGLE "THIS PERFECT DAY" (JULY 1977, LATER COVERED BY THE FALL) CHARTED IN THE UK. IGNORED IN AUSTRALIA THEY MOVED TO THE UK. THE SAINTS WERE ACTIVE FOR ABOUT 50 YEARS AND CHRIS BAILEY WAS THE ONLY PERMANENT MEMBER (AMONG 40 OTHER PLAYERS). THE SAINTS MADE 14 ALBUMS, BAILEY MADE 7 SOLO ALBUMS. IN 1963 RECORDED BILLY EDD WHEELER'S "HIGH FLYING BIRD", WHICH INFLUENCED FOLK-ROCK AND WAS COVERED BY JEFFERSON AIRPLANE (THEY PLAYED IT AT THE MONTEREY POP FESTIVAL, 1967), RICHIE HAVENS (PLAYED IT AT THE WOODSTOCK FESTIVAL, 1969), NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE AND OTHERS. THE TITLE INFLUENCED NOEL GALLAGHER'S HIGH FLYING BIRDS. JUDY HENSKE WORKED WITH LENNY BRUCE, JUDY GARLAND, PHIL OCHS, WOODY ALLEN. MADE THE DEATH DEFYING JUDY HENSKE WITH JACK NITZSCHE (REPRISE, 1966) AND FAREWELL ALDEBARAN FOR FRANK ZAPPA'S STRAIGHT RECORDS IN 1969.
