D. A. PENNEBAKER  (94)  /  AMERICAN DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKER. ONE OF THE PIONEERS OF DIRECT CINEMA FOCUSING ON PERFORMING ARTS AND POLITICS. IN 2013 RECEIVED AN ACADEMY HONORARY AWARD ("LIFETIME OSCAR"). SOME OF HIS CLASSIC FILMS WERE: DAYBREAK EXPRESS (1953 WITH MUSIC BY DUKE ELLINGTON), DON'T LOOK BACK (1965/1967 WITH BOB DYLAN), SOMETHING IS HAPPENING (1966, UNRELEASED, WITH BOB DYLAN), EAT THE DOCUMENT (1966, WITH BOB DYLAN), MONTEREY POP (1967/1968), SWEET TORONTO (1969/1971, WITH THE PLASTIC ONO BAND), ALICE COOPER (1970), KEEP ON ROCKIN' (1969, WITH LITTLE RICHARD), ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS (1973, WITH DAVID BOWIE), JIMI PLAYS MONTEREY (1986, WITH JIMI HENDRIX), SHAKE! OTIS AT MONTEREY (1987, WITH OTIS REDDING).   

 

 

AUGUST 3

DAMIEN LOVELOCK  (65)  /  AUSTRALIAN PUNK ROCK SINGER, SPORTS BROADCASTER AND WRITER. HE FRONTED THE PUNK ROCK BAND THE CELIBATE RIFLES FROM 1980. THE CELIBATE RIFLES FORMED IN SYDNEY IN 1979 AND OBVIOUSLY NAMED THEMSELVES AFTER SEX PISTOLS. LATER THEY WERE DESCRIBED AS POST-RADIO BIRDMAN SOUND.  IN MARCH 1982 THE CELIBATE RIFLES RECORDED AND RELEASED THEIR DEBUT FOUR-SONG EP "BUT JACQUES, THE FISH?" DIY STYLE.

 

 

AUGUST 7

DAVID BERMAN  (52)  /  AMERICAN SINGER SONGWRITER, GUITARIST, POET AND CARTOONIST. WROTE AND RECORDED SIX ALBUMS WITH HIS BAND SILVER JEWS. WROTE TWO BOOKS: ACTUAL AIR (1999) AND THE PORTABLE FEBRUARY (2009). HIS NEW BAND PURPLE MOUNTAINS RELEASED A DEBUT ALBUM IN JULY 2019. SOON AFTER THAT HE COMMITTED SUICIDE. BERMAN'S FIRST BAND ECTOSLAVIA INCLUDED STEPHEN MALKMUS AND BOB NASTANOVICH (LATER OF INDIE ROCK PAVEMENT).

 

 

AUGUST 25

CLORA BRYANT  (92)  /  AMERICAN JAZZ TRUMPET PLAYER ("TRUMPETISTE"), CLASSIC BIG BAND AND BEBOP PLAYER. BEGAN ON THE PIANO, THEN AT HIGH SCHOOL.TURNED TO TRUMPET (AND BOP, AFTER HEARING HOWARD McGHEE) . IN 1946 JOINED THE LEADING ALL-FEMALE SWING ENSEMBLE THE INTERNATIONAL SWEETHEARTS OF RHYTHM. IN THE 1950's LED JAM SESSIONS AND BACKED UP VISITING STARS LIKE BILLIE HOLIDAY OR JOSEPHINE BAKER. 1957 SOLE SOLO ALBUM GAL WITH A HORN. 1970's AND 1980'S LED HER OWN COMBO SWI-BOP, THEN TOURED SOVIET UNION AS THE FIRST LADY HORN PLAYER. DIZZY GILLESPIE'S PROTÉGÉ, YET HAD TO FACE SEXIST DISCRIMINATION AND HARDSHIPS OF BEING A SINGLE PARENT WITH FOUR CHILDREN.
